The Mute Swan Nesting Census 2016
16th MayWith 10 nests now hatched, it is getting to the busy stage of the census! However, some interesting data is emerging on our Coloured Ring Project. Out of our 175 Project birds we have only relocated 105 of them! This means there are lots of missing birds. Brendan Kavanagh recently re-sighted 2 of the missing Swans in Kilcullen, Co Kildare. That is 37 Km from where they were ringed. The dispersal area is further that we anticipated.
A jump to 43 nests and 3 already hatched! Please keep the reports coming in, even if it is just still on nest. all data is appreciated
A second nest has hatched, this time at Fr Collins Park. Many thanks to Tom Carroll for the report. That now brings us to 36 nests this year. Still down on last year, but hopefully as the weather improves we will get more reports.
30/04/2016The project is now up to 32 nests. Many thanks to all who have reported nests. There are still a lot of traditional sites that have no report to date.
The re-sighting of the coloured rings is moving along nicely. Many thanks for all the sightings. particular thanks to all the Kildare Branch members who have been submitting reports. Help is still needed as 91 individuals sighted out of 160 means there are 70 out there to be read for the first time since April 1st
We are only at 26 nests which is less than expected at this time. However there are lots of sites which have had no reports to date. I expect this figure to rise over the coming weeks. Most of the non breeding Swans have moved off the Grand Canal into Parks. With the RAS project (Re-trapping Adults for Survival) has now at 84 resighted - so a good start to this project.
i was watching Swans trying to build a nest today and came home to find a report of the first 2016 Hatchings!! In April. Last year May 4th was the earliest and it was the same pair first this year but 2 weeks earlier.
So another years nesting Census has commenced. 2015 was a good breeding year, so a second years data required to get an accurate picture. This year many of the Swans are ringed. Initially I will update this page weekly as reports come in. Already 21 nests confirmed and many traditional sites not yet visited. The date on the chart is the date last report received and the yellow codes are coloured leg rings to keep track of individuals. I will be adding many more locations and all reports are welcome and replied to. firstname.lastname@example.org
